B1A4

B1A4 (Korean: 비원에이포) is a five member South Korean boy band founded by WM Entertainment in 2011. The band consists of Jinyoung (leader), Baro, Gongchan, Sandeul, and CNU (Shin Woo). They have gained much interest due to being first introduced in a webtoon and for their unique sound mixing pop with rock for their debut album. Their group name, B1A4, has been explained as being due to one member having B blood type, and the other four having A blood type. It also stands for “Be The One, All For One”.

History

2011: Debut ‘O.K’

B1A4 debuted on April 21, 2011 with their debut track ‘O.K’ off of their album ‘Let’s Fly’ and released a music video. They were first introduced to the world through the creative marketing of webtoons before their actual pictures were released. Their debut album ‘Let’s Fly’ includes a song written and composed by the leader Jinyoung. As rookies, this garners much interest being that most debut albums contain little input from the members. They made their live debut on April 23, 2011 on MBC’s Music Core.

MBLAQ

MBLAQ, (Korean: 엠블랙, an acronym for Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality) is a South Korean quintet boy band created by Korean pop R&B singer, producer and actor Rain under a branch of his label J.Tune Entertainment called J.Tune Camp. The five members include Seung Ho (Yang Seung Ho : Leader), G.O (Jung Byung Hee : Main Vocalist), Joon (Lee Chang Sun : Vocalist), Thunder/Cheon Doong (Park Sang Hyun : Vocalist/Rapper), and Mir (Bang Cheol Yong : Rapper). The group debuted on October 9, 2009 at Rain’s Legend of Rainism concert.

History

2009 (Debut): Just BLAQ

Having trained for two years, MBLAQ was first announced on 21 September 2009, with an appearance in Nylon magazine. The group appeared alongside Rain, in his Legend of Rainism concert. They performed various songs from their produced EP, Just BLAQ and were met with praise, with many spectators at the concert and fans considering them as the next DBSK. The group released teasers for their debut song, “Oh Yeah” on October 12, with the music video being released two days later.[citation needed] Coinciding with the music video, MBLAQ’s debut single album Just BLAQ, was released on the same day, topping various charts in South Korea. The next day, the group made their broadcast debut on M.net’s M! Countdown, performing “Oh Yeah”.

In early December, the group debuted in Japan, following their performance during Rain’s fan meeting- resulting in a documentary being produced surrounding their stay in Japan.Later that month, the group commenced promotions for their follow up track, “G.O.O.D Luv”, with two music videos released, an ‘unofficial’ MV released prior to the ‘official’ MV which was released on December 10, 2009.

2010: Y

On May 19, 2010, the group released their second single album, Y, a track originally for Rain himself. Rain wrote, composed, produced and choreographed Y. The music video for the title track, “Y” was released on the same day at midnight with teasers being released from May 6. MBLAQ claimed first place on the 3rd of June 2010 on the music show M! Countdown, and were voted the best Rookie Group for the first half of 2010 through a poll conducted by Korean music site Bugs, obtaining 46% of the votes.

On December 29, 2010, MBLAQ released a teaser MV for their upcoming full-length album. Their first full-length album is set for release on January 10, 2011.

On December 30, 2010, J.Tune Entertainment merged with JYP Entertainment. However, as MBLAQ is part of J.Tune Camp, they are not considered as part of JYP Entertainment.

2011: First full length album, BLAQ Style and Japanese debut

MBLAQ were initially scheduled for a November 2010 return, however in December J.Tune Camp revealed that MBLAQ would be returning to the music scene in January 2011 instead. MBLAQ displayed advertisements on buses and bus stops in Seoul prior to the release of their album, and it was also revealed that MBLAQ participated in the production of the album, personally choosing all songs present on the album. Seungho stated: “As a form of independence [from Rain], we personally chose all of the songs and participated in the production”, with Seungho composing and playing the piano for the introductory track Sad Memories and Mir writing the rap lyrics for You’re my +.

On January 3, 2011, J.Tune Camp released MBLAQ’s MV for Cry on Youtube, an R&B track produced by E-Tribe.[18] The video gained more than 500,000 views within a week. A teaser MV was released on December 29, 2010, prior to the full MV release in January. In between the release of the Cry MV and their album, MBLAQ revealed album jacket photos for BLAQ Style. Prior to the album’s release on the 10th of January, MBLAQ held a fan-meet for 1500 fans on the 9th of January 2011, where the fans were able to watch the first performance of Cry and also the then yet-to-be revealed title track Stay. On January 10, 2011, MBLAQ released their first studio album and two MV teasers for their title track Stay. After only one day of releasing their album, MBLAQ recorded 25,000 orders of the album. On January 11, J.Tune Camp released the full MV for Stay on Youtube, which gained more than 400,000 views within a week.

On January 13, MBLAQ returned to the stage on M.Net’s M!Countdown, followed by comeback performances on the 14th, 15th and 16th at KBS 2TV’s Music Bank, MBC’s Music Core, and SBS’s Inkigayo respectively.

J.Tune Camp helda press conference towards the end of January with Japanese press regarding their official plans. In February, MBLAQ visited Japan to record songs and to have a photo shoot for their album. Upon arrival, 800 reporters and fans were gathered at the airport.MBLAQ are set to release their Japanese album on May 4, 2011, with live performances to be held at Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Tokyo during the week.

The album consists of the 13 tracks from BLAQ Style, as well as 3 new tracks. Two of the three new tracks included MBLAQ’s participation in its production. The track 돌아올 수 없는/ Can’t Come Back was composed by G.O and the lyrics were written by Mir, while the song titled You was written and composed by Cheon Doong. When it was released, BLAQ Style 3D reached No. 1 on the Hanteo charts and MBLAQ’s song Again was used to promote The Fighter (2010 film) in South Korea.

BLAQ Style 3D was released in Taiwan as a licensed album on the 18th of March, and reached the No.1 spot from March 18 to 24 on Taiwan’s G-Music chart under the K-pop and J-pop category without any promotions.

On the 11th of April, the MV for Your Luv was released on MTV Japan, and Your Luv ringtones were released on the ringtone downloading site, Recochoku. After the release of Your Luv on April 19, it was ranked first for 4 consecutive days on Recochoku.MBLAQ were also placed first on the ‘Cellphone Message Music Video’ chart. They performed Oh yeah, Your Luv and Daijoubu and more than 4000 CDs were sold during the event. Your Luv reached first position on the ‘Daily Oricon Charts’ for May 3rd, which is before their official debut and release date.

Music, dance, and influence

Initially debuting as a group more focussed on dance and pop music, MBLAQ have since experimented with different genres. Oh Yeah and Y were dance/pop tracks, My Dream, Last Luv and Rust are ballad tracks, Bang Bang Bang is rock/pop, Cry is an R&B track, and Stay is a track infused with hip-hop, electronic and rock.

With Rain being their mentor and major influence, he either wrote, composed, produced and/or choreographed a few tracks for MBLAQ, including Oh Yeah, G.O.O.D Luv, Y, Cry and Stay. For the release of Just BLAQ and Y, MBLAQ focussed heavily on their performance with strong choreography. With BLAQ Style, MBLAQ have decided to focus more on the music and melody, rather than the choreography.

 Career

2007

 Debut

Although F.T. Island’s first album, Cheerful Sensibility, was scheduled to be released commercially in May 2007, the members appeared on the show “Wanna be my boyfriend?” (Korean: 두근두근 여친만들기) on the Korean television channel MNet. The band also performed on stage live at Rolling Hall and held their first official showcase at Live House Melon-AX, Gwangjang-dong in Seoul on May 27, 2007.[5]

On June 7, 2007 the group performed their debut song Love Sick on the popular music television program M!Countdown; their debut album, Cheerful Sensibility, was released on the same day. Despite their young age, F.T. Island captured the hearts of the young and old with their musicality, earning the nickname “Flower Boy” band. Their title song stayed on top of many popular music charts for 8 consecutive weeks in South Korea. They received their first #1 M!Countdown, beating other top artists such as Dynamic Duo and Fly to the Sky two weeks after debuting.[6]

 Debut album: Cheerful Sensibility

Cheerful Sensibility combined 13 songs that were loosely divided into two parts, “Emotional Chapter” and “F.T. Island Chapter”, according to the genre of the songs.[4] The “Emotional Chapter” consists of rock ballads that were composed by those who also worked with many famous Korean singers, such as SG Wannabe. The “F.T. Island Chapter” was produced by the Japanese composers who worked with the Japanese band, SMAP and is composed of a variety of pop rock songs.[7]

Selling over 79,000 copies in 2007, it was the sixth best-selling album of the year.[8] The album was re-released on December 3, 2007, titled The Refreshment, with three extra songs, a photobook, a stack of photocards, and a mixing program called Music 2.0 which allows one to adjust the levels of the instruments and vocals accordingly. This edition sold 25,724 copies in December 2007.[8]

2008

Overseas activities and Japanese debut album: Prologue of F.T. Island

After debuting in Korea, FNC Music moved F.T. Island’s activities overseas. On March 31, 2008, an autograph session in Malaysia at the Damansara Cineleisure was held, which was to be follow the next day by the group’s first concert at the Sunway Lagoon Amphitheater.[9] The performance was cancelled, and their first concert was held in Thailand instead, at the Royal Paragon Hall on April 12, 2008. The band performed songs from their album and showcased their individual talents in their solo performances.[10]

F.T. Island’s Japanese debut album, entitled Prologue of F.T. Island, was released on June 7, 2008, with the first single released being Soyogi . The album consists of 8 songs, 2 of which are newer versions of the original songs F.T. Island and Primadonna. The last track, Always Be Mine, is an English version of First Kiss from their debut album (though the lyrics are original). Music videos were also released for Soyogi and Friendship, displaying the band’s professional and youthful sides, respectively.

Return to Korea and second album: Colorful Sensibility

After their promotional activities in Japan ended, the band returned to Korea to release their second Korean album Colorful Sensibility on August 27, 2008. A follow-up EP, Colorful Sensibility Part 2, was released on October 17, 2008.

 Japanese single, The One

Later that year, F.T. Island released The One, their first Japanese commercial single, under an indie label AI Entertainment. The single hit #9 on the Oricon daily charts.[11] F&C Music stated that although other Korean bands utilized the assistance of large Japanese record labels to gain popularity, F.T. Island was able to make it onto the charts without any true marketing efforts.[12] The single also became notable for being the last official release with member Oh Won Bin before his departure.[13]

 2009

New lineup and mini-album: Jump Up

Rumors had been circulating that speculated that member Oh Won Bin would be leaving the group. On January 28, 2009, the rumors were confirmed as it was announced that he would indeed be leaving the group and would soon be replaced.[14] It was announced a day later that FNC trainee Song Seung Hyun would be joining F.T. Island as a guitarist and backup vocalist.[15] With the new lineup change, F.T. Island released the music video for their mini-album title song “Bad Woman.” They also promoted it on SBS Inkigayo, and two days later, released the band’s first Korean mini-album Jump Up.

 Japanese Single: I Believe Myself

On April 22, F.T. Island released their second Japanese single, I believe Myself. For the first time, members participated with lyrics and composition. For the song Moonlight Angel, member Lee Jae Jin co-wrote it and leader Choi Jong Hoon co-composed the song. I Believe Myself is the first Japanese single with member Song Seung Hyun. They held their 2009 F.T. Island Tour-I Believe Myself in cities all over Japan during the summer of 2009.[16]

 2009 ASIA Tour

F.T. Island toured parts of Asia which include Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, etc. to promote themselves in the summer of 2009. The showcases kicked off in Singapore during June 25 to 27.[17]

Third Korean album: Cross & Change

While preparing for overseas promotions, the members were in the midst of recording their third album. On July 9, FNC Music released a jacket photo for the upcoming third album called Cross & Change. On the following day, a musc video teaser was released online, featuring kids watching their idols (played by the members themselves) on TV. The title song, called “I Hope/Barae”, was released on July 16.[18]

F.T. Island tried out a variety of music styles for Cross & Change; it includes a total of 12 songs, ranging from moving ballads to addictive songs with a bright melody. F.T. Island adopted a new fashion style and concept for the album, using a “retro” and the so-called “Bokgo” approach, which was inspired during the “jeans jeans look” from the 80s in Korea.[19]

 Japanese single: Raining

F.T. Island released their 3rd Japanese single, Raining, on October 21, 2009. A music video of the single’s title track was released. Leader Choi Jong Hoon played the piano for the title song instead of the guitar.[20]

 F.T. Island’s sub-group: F.T. Triple

The three members Choi Jong Hun, Choi Min Hwan, and Lee Jae Jin formed a sub-group called F.T. Triple. Some of the reasons behind this move were to showcase more of the members’ skills and to prevent lead singer, Lee Hongki, from overstraining his voice again (refer to Gayo Daejun Incident under ‘Headlines’ below). Another reason was to continue promoting F.T. Island while Lee Hongki was busy filming the South Korean drama “You’re Beautiful” and while Song Seunghyun was busy with variety shows.

At first, this trio was unofficially announced at the Dream Concert in Japan as “A3”. They almost named themselves A3 because they all are blood A type. They wanted to keep the F.T. name so they added Triple at the end of it to represent that it is a trio. In F.T. triple, Lee Jaejin, originally in charge of bass for F.T. Island, becomes a guitarist and the lead vocalist; leader Choi Jonghun plays the piano and Choi Min Hwan continues to play the drums. Their first single was titled “Love Letter” and was released with F.T. Island’s 2CD Repackaged Album Double Date as a second CD named Two Date that features all F.T. Triple songs.[21]

National concert tour – “Men’s Stories”

F.T. Island held a national tour titled, “Men’s Stories”.

F.T. Island released their 3rd album titled, Cross & Change. Their hit single from the album, I Hope, was very well received by their fans and the five members planned on showing their life behind the stage along with strong visuals and sounds on a more personal level for the fans. For their concert, F.T. Island emphasized their growth as a band as they begin to shed their boyish charms for a more mature and masculine appeal.[22]

The national tour began on November 14, 2009 in Seoul, South Korea.

 2010-present

 2010 Asia Tour

In the months January and February, the boys started touring in Asia. The tour visited Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Singapore. Tickets were sold out quickly; representatives of the band believe it was due to the popularity of Lee Hong Ki starring in the drama, “You’re Beautiful”.

Major Debut in Japan with Singles, Flower Rock and Brand New Days

After celebrating their 1000 days, they flew to Japan and stayed there until the end of August for their major debut in Japan under the combination of new Japanese label company, Warner Music Japan and their official label company, FNC Music. They also began a new Japanese show which began airing starting 7 April 2010.[23] On May 19, 2010, F.T. Island released their new single “Flower Rock” under Warner Music.[24] “Flower Rock” entered the Oricon daily charts at 3rd position on May 19, 2010, the day of its release, and held the fourth position of that week.[25] On July 14, 2010, F.T. Island released another single named “Brand-new days,” which included songs written and composed by the F.T. Island members Song Seung Hyun and Choi Jong Hun. F.T. Island performed a five-city concert tour in Japan after releasing both singles.[26][27] They also performed at the international rock festival “Summer Sonic 2010” in Maishima Arena, Osaka, Japan.[28]

Return to Korea with mini album: Beautiful Journey

After promotions in Japan, F.T. Island focused on their comeback in Korea in mid-August 2010.[29] Their new mini album “Beautiful Journey” and the music video for their main title song “Love Love Love” were released on August 25, 2010. F.T. Island held their comeback performance in Korean on August 27, 2010. The title song topped many popular music charts in South Korea and also gained international notice, especially in Taiwan.[30] Choi Jong Hoon co-wrote and co-composed one of the songs, titled Don Quixote’s Song, making it the first Korean song that includes the composition from F.T. Island itself. During November and December, F.T. Island balanced two separate concerts, the Beautiful Journey Concert and So Today… Concert, in both Korea and Japan. F.T. Island were voted first for Mnet Asian Music Awards 2010, but did not receive the award as they were not present for the ceremony; the award was given to another band.

 Japanese single: So Today…

While promoting their second Korean mini-album, F.T. Island recorded another Japanese single titled So today… to be released in November. All three songs were co-written by Lee Jae Jin; the song, Boom Boom Boom, was composed by Choi Jong Hoon.[31] The single ranked 6th on the Oricon Daily Chart; the chart rankings on the same day had KAT-TUN’s “Change Ur World” on the 1st position, followed by SKE48, Kobukuro, AAA, and Morning Musume, taking the 2nd to 5th positions respectively. KAT-TUN, Kobukuro and other singers are known to be the top chart killers. It is indeed incredible for a band, and not a dance group to top the 6th position in the chart. With F.T. Island’s 3rd single taking the 6th position, they now have a record of all their singles ranking top 10 in the Oricon charts.[32] About 10,000 fans turned up at their promotional events in Osaka and Tokyo on 20 and 21 November.[33]

 Success in Taiwan

Due to their immense popularity in Taiwan, F.T. Island held a concert on December 25, celebrating Christmas together with 9000 fans. F.T. Island is Korea’s first rock band to hold a big scale concert in Taiwan and they had no other special request besides asking for the best sound systems and hardware. Former vocalist and guitarist, honoured guest Oh Wonbin, performed his first single as a solo artist and a brand new song, which has yet not been released, at the concert. F.T. Island performed songs in three languages, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.[34] Though they have only entered the Taiwan music industry for a short period of 10 months, with an album sales record over 100,000, FT Island won favorable comments in the Chinese media.[35] Just for the concert tickets and merchandises alone, the revenue for FTIsland’s [Beautiful Journey] concert have exceeded a total of NT$20Million. They have been named the Korean artistes who earned the most money for the end of 2010 and FTIsland also wished to visit Taiwan again soon.[36] Four main news agencies namely, China Times, Yonhap News, Apple Daily and Liberty Times, covered news on the concert, showing the band’s high popularity. FT Island also broke several records in Taiwan with 500,000 hits on mobile downloads and 10,000,000 hits on music downloads.[37]
